Mayors plant trees at Ibirapuera Park

The opening of C40 in Sao Paulo was celebrated with a tree planting at Ibirapuera Park. Mayor of Sao Paulo Gilberto Kassab arrived in a electric car and conducted the planting with other 16 mayors

After watering the seeds, Mayor Kassab and Chair of C40 Mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg exchanged benches as gifts for their cities. The North American Mayor brought a Central Park bench to Ibirapuera and received a wood bench designed by the Brazilian artist Hugo França who used wood from Goiás, in the Central region from Brazil.

Mayor Kassab said that the event was an important opportunity for UN to recognize the efforts from large cities in tackling climate change. "Sao Paulo was developed without planning, but the City Hall has managed to accomplish many projects, such as vehicle inspection and green areas extension".

Mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg said that future mayors have to be prepared. "As the world becomes more urbanized, mayors will face greater challenges.”
