Session #1 - Energy Efficiency in Existing Buildings

This session is designed to look at a range of retrofitting options from across the C40, but with an emphasis on funding mechanisms and policy drivers

Energy efficiency in buildings is one of the most popular programs within the C40 Cities. From a technological standpoint many of the solutions already exist. However cities still need to explore the implementation options and financial mechanisms necessary to deliver retrofitting programs and the policy/political mechanisms that would drive private building retrofitting. This session is designed to look at a range of retrofitting options from across the C40, but with an emphasis on funding mechanisms and policy drivers.

Session #2 - Bus Rapid Transit & Low Emission Bus Programs

This session will consider how BRT compares to other transit investment choices

Bus Rapid Transit systems are a high capacity, lower cost and reasonably flexible transit solution to improve mobility and reliability while decreasing emissions in urban areas. While a number of C40 cities have experienced great success with BRT, others are just beginning to explore this approach. This session will consider how BRT compares to other transit investment choices, necessary infrastructure planning, and alternative bus technologies.

Session #3 - Tree Planting & Urban Forestry

This session will explore program design, financing and partnership potential as well as the importance of stewardship in preserving this critical asset

Urban forestry programs have many benefits, from improving livability of our communities, reducing urban heat island effect (and therefore energy spent cooling offices and homes), slowing urban runoff during storm events, providing habitat to urban wildlife and improving air quality. City tree planting programs take many forms and rely on all manner of partners for implementation & ongoing maintenance. This session will explore program design, financing and partnership potential as well as the importance of stewardship in preserving this critical asset.

Session #4 - Integrated Waste Management

This session will consider both individual elements as well as coordinated approaches of successful programs

Public engagement campaigns across the globe emphasize the importance of the three R’s: reduce, reuse and recycle. In practice, and at the city scale, integrated waste management programs incorporate reduction strategies, take back programs, recycling and composting and ultimately disposal and are targeting significant diversion rates (including zero waste approaches). This session will consider both individual elements as well as coordinated approaches of successful programs.

Session #5 - Sustainable New Construction

This session will explore policies and programs to address the sustainability and climate impact of new construction

A number of successful green building initiatives have been launched by C40 cities. Many of these programs address individual building sectors (e.g. municipal buildings, commercial buildings, schools, etc.), others set specific resource conservation targets (e.g. 25% water savings, 30% material reuse, net zero construction). At the same time, many C40 cities have yet to establish a comprehensive approach for sustainable new development. This session will explore policies and programs to address the sustainability and climate impact of new construction, including building codes, standards and incentives for new buildings and developments.

Session #6 - Compact Cities

This session will explore different approaches to compactness that have evolved over many centuries

High density living enables reduced land-take for buildings, a range of infrastructure provision opportunities, including efficiency and affordable public transport solutions, and decentralized and more efficient energy systems. These in turn allow residents and businesses to enjoy widespread proximity to quality green and public spaces, as well as a social, economic and cultural mix of uses. This session will explore different approaches to compactness that have evolved over many centuries in Europe, have been designed into being in some parts of North America and Asia, as well as emerging approaches in other regions.

This session will explore the current state of market research that can help to inform these campaigns, innovative campaigns already underway, and areas for future opportunity

There is growing recognition that global warming isn't just a problem for future generations to worry about, nor is it one that city governments can solve on their own. Recognizing the importance of individual action, cities are launching community engagement campaigns, aimed at encouraging residents, businesses and community organizations to engage in climate solutions. This session will explore the current state of market research that can help to inform these campaigns, innovative campaigns already underway, and areas for future opportunity.

Session #9 - District Heating, Cooling and Energy Planning

This panel will explore options to establish an operation of district energy systems for space heating and cooling, for tri-generation and as an important component of sustainable community energy planning

District energy is a shared energy distribution system that can provide heating or cooling to a group of buildings, manufacturing operations, or, in some instances, to one or more large, mixed use neighborhoods within a city. In general, district energy systems are more energy efficient than the heating and cooling of individual buildings, resulting in reduced greenhouse gas emissions when compared to conventional single building heating and cooling. This panel will explore options to establish an operation of district energy systems for space heating and cooling, for tri-generation and as an important component of sustainable community energy planning.

Bicycling provides a clean alternative to both single occupancy vehicle transportation and traditional transit systems. C40 cities have adopted different approaches to encourage cycling in urban centers, though most successful programs incorporate some level of planning, infrastructure investment, and public cycle share or bike hire program. This session will explore policy & financing options as both stand alone and package solutions.

Session #11 - Adaptation & Vulnerability

This panel will consider how to assess and address a city’s vulnerability to climate change taking into account populations and resources at risk and the tools now available

As the devastating effects of major climate disruptions are felt in more and more locations throughout the globe, cities are on the forefront of responding and adapting to climate uncertainty and its associated impacts.

Negative impacts are experienced in a very unequal way across regions and within cities. Poorer areas and populations are particularly at higher risk from a changing climate from direct impacts such as flooding, drought and hurricanes and from follow-on impacts such as loss of home and livelihood as well as illness and social unrest.

This panel will consider how to assess and address a city’s vulnerability to climate change taking into account populations and resources at risk and the tools now available to evaluate and help form a response to the multiple hazards posed by a changing climate.

Session #12 - Landfill Gas Capture and Energy Generation

This session will highlight the experience of cities that are successfully generating energy from waste gas

Most C40 cities have new and/or historic landfills for in-land waste disposal. In some cases, cities have incorporated up-to-date landfill gas capture technology and energy generation from captured gas. Others, particularly those with older landfills, may be relying on older technology or may be flaring excess methane rather than capturing for energy generation. This session will highlight the experience of cities that are successfully generating energy from waste gas, and identify potential areas of collaboration for those cities interested in implementing similar programs.

Session #13 - Strategies for Smart Cities

This session will explore how smart solutions can achieve significant emissions reductions by delivering information and optimizing delivery of key services.

Major advances in information and communications technology (ICT) now make ICT a potentially significant tool that cities can use to manage resources more efficiently and provide information to citizens to better understand the financial and environmental costs of their own consumption. Smart cities allow city authorities to create new services and improve existing ones by collecting and analyzing information about key infrastructure (energy, water, transport, healthcare, local community). This session will explore how smart solutions can achieve significant emissions reductions by delivering information and optimizing delivery of key services.

In addition to regulatory and incentive based approaches for green taxi programs, this session will consider the possibility of common emissions standards and/or industry challenges for green taxi procurement

Taxis play an important and prominent role in all our cities. Green Taxi programs that either incentivize or require fuel efficient or alternative fueled taxi vehicles are one option to reduce urban transport emissions. Cities buy, license or otherwise regulate thousands of taxis annually, but in many cases these vehicles are purchased off the shelf from a limited market. In addition to regulatory and incentive based approaches for green taxi programs, this session will consider the possibility of common emissions standards and/or industry challenges for green taxi procurement.

This panel will consider how a city determines their own pathway to green growth including setting priorities and developing and implementing a strategy and policies to attract and retain green industry and services

Encouraging the development and establishment of green industries in cities offers the prospect of enhanced local economic development, green job growth and overall reduced greenhouse gas emissions by substituting new, green, innovative technologies for older more polluting ones. A number of C40 cities have been practicing green growth by encouraging green zones or green industrial centers within or near an urban area. This panel will consider how a city determines their own pathway to green growth including setting priorities and developing and implementing a strategy and policies to attract and retain green industry and services.

Session #16 - Urban Drainage & Adaptation

This session will explore urban drainage challenges facing cities and consider how non-traditional infrastructure investments might be applied

The changing climate brings with it the challenge of managing greater overall levels of rainfall and more intense storm events in our cities. As cities consider the significant local investments necessary to divert stormwater during major flood events, alternatives to traditional grey infrastructure are being considered. Green infrastructure employs strategies such as green roofs, enhanced tree pits, permeable pavements, and swales to capture or detain stormwater to maintain or restore natural systems. This session will explore urban drainage challenges facing cities and consider how non-traditional infrastructure investments might be applied.
