Construction of Cycle Routes

Cool alternative to reduce traffic jams and lower pollution emissions, the cycle routes are spreading all over Sao Paulo

According to estimations, 370,000 people used bicycles as a means of transportation in the city of Sao Paulo by 2007. These data correspond to nearly six times more comparing to 2002, which means that the demand for cycle routes increases at a rapid pace.

In 2006, the City Hall launched “Pro-ciclista” (“Pro-cyclist” - Executive Group for Cycle Routes Improvements), a bureau responsible for promoting the coexistence of different means of transportation and conceiving interlinked cycle routes projects. One of its assignments is to develop studies about safety, comfort, and environment protection.

The Municipal Government has built 14.8 km of cycle routes in streets since 2006 (Figure B). It also established several parking lots for bicycles alongside metro stations. There are also over 1,000 parking lots in schools, libraries, parks, and public buildings, and other 1,000 being constructed. Finally, the city government has started a pilot initiative that allows the local population to borrow bicycles in some metro stations, an initiative that has been successfully implemented in many cities such as Paris and Barcelona.

Recently, as an initiative to stimulate the use of bicycles, the city government has launched the first Cyclist Club-School of the city of Sao Paulo. The club was inaugurated in March 2008 and is comprised by professionals from the State Federation of Cyclism that teaches 3,200 children on how to use a bicycle. It is important to note that all children are regular students of public schools in the city.
