São Paulo participates on the Global Task Force for Covid-19 Recovery virtual conference

C40 Project intends at the economic recovery of cities in a sustainable way after the impacts caused by the pandemic

Mayor Ricardo Nunes attended the C40 Network meeting to discuss the Global Task Force for Covid-19 Recovery, on Monday (10). The event was also accompanied by member-cities mayors of the network and was held virtually. The theme of the gathering was "Advancing on efforts to green and fair recovery with the support of the United States".

Launched in 2020, the Task Force has as its main purpose the reconstruction of cities and economies in a sustainable way after the impacts of Covid-19. The group comprehends that a green and fair recovery from the pandemic must have as its mainstays public health and science, to guarantee climate resilience and foment social equity in the municipalities. The Task Force already counts with 40 member-cities signatures, including São Paulo.

The meeting was mediated by the C40 Governance Director, Anna Beech, and had as hosts the Mayor of Los Angeles and C40 President, Eric Garcetti, and the Mayor of Milan and President of the Task Force, Giuseppe Sala. The main topics discussed were the initiatives of the participants' cities associated with the environment, as the reinforcement of the call of mayors for actions aligned to Green and Fair Recovery and the global role of the municipalities.

During the event, Mayor Ricardo Nunes defended that green and fair recovery on cities takes support on actions that face the climate emergency and decrease social inequalities. Also recognized that the vaccine is fundamental to overcome the crisis, but, considering the limited number of doses, the City Hall searches to financially support the most needed population.

The presence of the capital represents the opportunity to propel São Paulo, the biggest metropolis of South America, as a climate leader in the region. Founding-member of C40, the city developed, in partnership with the group, the PlanClima SP, that seeks the reduction of greenhouse effects gas emissions on the municipality until 2050.
