May 25th: Africa Day remembers the fight of African villages for freedom

In 2021, the date celebrates the African "Art, Culture and Heritage"

Africa Day was instituted by the Organization of African Union, known nowadays as the African Union (AU), and celebrates the country's independence and fight for the liberty of African communities. The movement was the first union of countries in the continental ground and was inspired by Ghana, the first African nation at South Saara to conquer independence, in 1957, led by Kwame Nkrumah. In 1972, the United Nations (UN) recognized this date.

This year, Africa Month is celebrated under the theme of "Art, Culture and Heritage: Levers for Building Africa We Want". The date also honors Charlotte Mexeke, a South-African political activist. She's recognized as one of the firsts black women to conquer a Bachelor's degree in her country, besides being the first black African woman to graduate at an American university.
