São Paulo City Hall promotes webinar on racial inequalities and urban security

The event marks the Abolition of Slavery Day with thoughts about institutional racism

The city of São Paulo, through the Municipal Departments of International Relations (SMRI), of Urban Security (SMSU), of Justice (SMJ) and Human Rights and Citizenship (SMDHC), promotes the webinar "Racial Disparities and Police Reform" next Thursday (13), at 7:30 pm. It will be broadcasted by the Facebook pages of the Municipal Department of International Relations and the Municipal Secretariat of Human Rights and Citizenship.

The event, held on the Day for the Abolition of Slavery, discusses institutional racism and security institutions, the changes, and the investments in ethnic-racial training for racial equality. To talk about the theme, the guests are:

• Ester Rufino – Head of the Brazilian Institute of Criminal Sciences (IBCCRIM): activist of the black movement for 16 years, graduated from Zumbi Palmares University and specialist in Advocacy from the Hub.

• Kenia Maria – Defender os Black Women's Rights at the UN Women: actress, writer, screenwriter, and entrepreneur, she has appointed Defender of Black Women's Rights at the UN Women in 2017, in support of the International Decade of African-Descent People (2015-2024) and to the global initiative Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality within the framework of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.

• Daniel Almeida dos Santos - Coordinator of Promotion of Racial Equality (CPIR), linked to the Municipal Secretariat of Human Rights and Citizenship: Master's Degree in Public Policies by Universidade Federal do ABC and Bachelor's Degree in Law by Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie, he works at the São Paulo City Hall since 2014, with an emphasis on the implementation of public policies for the black population.

• Erickson Gavazza Marques - Associate Judge: jurist, professor, and Judge at the Court of Justice of the State of São Paulo.

Coordinated by the Municipal Secretary of International Relations, Marta Suplicy, the webinar was also attended by the Municipal Secretary of Urban Security, Elza Paulina Souza; the Municipal Secretary of Human Rights and Citizenship, Claudia Carletto; the Municipal Secretary of Justice, Eunice Prudente; the Deputy Secretary of Municipal Secretary of Human Rights and Citizenship, Elisa Lucas; and the Special Advisor of the Municipal Secretariat of International Relations, Andriana Vasconcellos.

In addition to reflecting on May 13th, the Day of Abolition of Slavery in Brazil, the event seeks to dialogue about black people's security and how to overcome racial inequalities in society. This initiative is part of the Combat Beacon to Structural Racism, the action of the Municipal Secretariat of International Relations to put São Paulo as a city known for respect and by confronting ethnic-racial, religious, and nationality discrimination.
