São Paulo stands out in international publication on reducing the use of plastic

The article brings visibility to the municipality's actions in combating the single use of the material

The city of São Paulo was highlighted in a publication of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) about the campaign to reduce the use of plastic. The article, published last Wednesday (17), brings visibility to the actions of the Municipal Urban Cleaning Authority (Amlurb) in combating the single use of the material, such as Municipal Laws to eliminate the unnecessary or needless use of disposable plastic. The publication can be accessed through this link.

Since 2019, the capital of São Paulo has been part of a group of 20 national, subnational, and municipal governments that are signatories of the New Plastics Economy, a global initiative led by Ellen MacArthur Foundation and by UNEP. The objective is to encourage sustainable practices and the circular management of plastic packaging and utensils.

From the perspective of reusing plastic, the international initiative foments the development of actions to maintain the material in the economy, but out of the environment, either through the elimination of the use of plastic or the innovation of its reuse. The New Plastics Economy is shared by institutions like National Geographic, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and World Economic Forum (WEF), universities, and other educational and research organizations, besides national, subnational, and local governments in five continents.
