São Paulo supports U20 Co-Presidents Statement on Green and Just recovery

The document highlights the importance of promoting recovery with sustainability, equality, and the role of local governments

The city of São Paulo supports the U20 Co-Chairs Statement on Green and Just Recovery, prepared by the leaders of the Urban 20 network, for after the pandemic. The document is an appeal to the G20 for the resumption of the pandemic to take place with actions to effectively face the climate emergency, reduce inequalities, and support cities and local governments to achieve these goals.

The letter was presented in the context of the Urban 20 Sherpas Meeting, held virtually in March this year. In the text, the leaders of the network emphasize that the moment is an opportunity to rebuild the world with sustainability and equality and that local governments are fundamental to mobilize society in favor of green, just, and local recovery.

The capital of São Paulo is committed to sustainable development through public policies to tackle climate change, such as the Climate Action Plan, a document that received certification from the C40 network for being aligned with the Paris Agreement and will be launched soon. The Municipality also encourages the development of green technologies and startups, such as Green Sampa, an initiative that maps innovative solutions to support the development of the sustainable technologies sector. Another action to combat the emission of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) is the transition of the bus fleet in the municipality whose objective is to reduce by 55.3% the emission of carbon dioxide in 10 years, in addition to investments for the requalification of sidewalks and the maintenance of cycle paths.
