My two years as International Relations Secretary in a city that is from the world

Article signed by the Secretary of International Affairs, Luiz Alvaro Salles Aguiar de Menezes.

I leave the Secretariat for International Affairs of São Paulo City.

I leave in search of new challenges, new knowledge, but with the same objective as always: to make our city a better place for all who live in it.

It was only 2 years as Secretary of International Relations in São Paulo City. But, it was 2 incredible years!

During this period, I had the privilege of working with a team that made me grow a lot, as a manager and as an internationalist. The International Relations team in the city of São Paulo is, without a doubt, the best in Brazil and faces teams from the largest cities in the world. A lean, trained, diverse, passionate, prepared, and ready team for new challenges.

Moreover, this is perhaps one of the attitudes that I have covered most of them during the entire period that I was Secretary: readiness!

In this short period, we were able to establish a new dynamic for International Relations in the city, acting nationally and internationally, seeking capillarity of projects with all Municipal Secretaries and public companies, with the Consular Body of São Paulo, ERESP, Embassies of Brazil abroad, international organizations, City Networks, private initiative, third sector entities, and Universities.

I'm sure I made my team, my fellow Secretaries, and their teams, a little bit crazier.

We did MONUEM-ERESP in municipal public schools, we participated in large international events such as U20, COP26, and C40 World Mayors Summit. We hold international events in the city with the World Bank, C40, Rainbow Cities, and other partners; we assist in the Climate Action Plan and the Manual of Urban Design and Road Works; we organize the largest international humanitarian aid in the history of the city, to São Paulo by Beirut.

We innovated in our participation in the LGBT Parade bringing the International Congress of LGBT Tourism to the capital of São Paulo, with an electric trio of International Relations and change of pedestrian signaling on Avenida Paulista. We assist in the creation of cashback, together with the Department of Culture and SP Cine so that our city becomes increasingly film-friendly, generating jobs, income and strengthening tourism.

There were many achievements, but the biggest one was being able to act in such a direct and diversified way, to have effective actions that improve the lives of São Paulo residents.

My term as Secretary does not end in the way I imagined. Like many others, the pandemic postponed our planning for 2020 and much of the work we had planned was pending. However, we actively participate in the fight against the coronavirus, not only in the city of São Paulo but in the world.

We mobilized to generate international reports that could be quickly distributed to all Brazilian municipalities, with the help of the National Front of Mayors, so that cities could know what was and was not working abroad. We also send weekly reports in English to consulates, embassies, city and university networks, of what São Paulo, one of the largest cities in the world, was doing. I always say that what works here will probably work in any other city.

Besides, the International Relations Team, together with the Mayor's Office, was responsible for raising more than R $ 72 million to face COVID-19, mostly in hospital supplies, masks, face shields, alcohol gel, basic baskets, drinking water and hygiene and cleaning kits.

I also have to thank the Consular Body of São Paulo, the second largest in the world, and the Chambers of Commerce, for all the partnership during my term and for all that it has done for the city of São Paulo over all these years. The City Networks that have supported us in several projects and that have an active and relevant voice in São Paulo.

To my friend Bruno Covas, Mayor of São Paulo, I can only thank him for the confidence and the challenge; both of being its Secretary of International Relations and of what lies ahead. As I have said before, I am very proud to be part of his team.

I say goodbye to the work done, already missing my team, everything we did together, and even what we started but we didn't have the opportunity to finish.

Always count on me, because I will always count on you.
