São Paulo signs C40 Participation Agreement for international cooperation

Adherence to the agreement reinforces the City Hall's commitment to sustainable development

São Paulo’s City Hall, with actions from the International Relations team, became a signatory of the Participation Agreement of the C40 city network. The document allows the intensification of technical cooperation for the City Hall and for residents of the capital of São Paulo, especially in the international area.

The city of São Paulo has been part of this network since 2005 and is a leader in fighting against atmospheric contamination, developing actions in electromobility and solid waste management. The city has a strong relationship with other Brazilian municipalities and with the C40 network, through agreements and projects that address the climate crisis.

"C40 is delighted to work with São Paulo on its ambitious climate agenda, focused on the elaboration of the municipal climate action plan compatible with the Paris Agreement. C40 sees São Paulo leading the rapid transformation of thousands of buses to zero emission technologies in its transportation system. These commitments and actions of the largest city in the southern hemisphere to combat the climate crisis are part of the global solution we need," commented Regional Director C40 for Latin America, Manuel Oliveira.

C40's cooperation projects include the participation of several municipal departments in the area of public management. In addition, the City Hall is producing the City of São Paulo's Climate Action Plan, a document with practical guidelines for the city to act in response to climate change. Aligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement, the São Paulo Climate Action Plan should present a trajectory to achieve the neutrality of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050, latest and define goals for sustainability, social equity and the strengthening of governance and collaboration between internal and external actors.

"The city of São Paulo is part of a global group formed by 90 cities that are committed to reconciling development and environment through public policies. The adhesion to this agreement reinforces the commitment of the City of São Paulo in the construction of a sustainable future", declared the Secretary of International Relations, Luiz Alvaro Salles Aguiar de Menezes.

With the objective of combating climate change, the network of C40 cities is a group formed by major cities around the world. Cities such as Buenos Aires (Argentina), Bogotá (Colombia), Chicago (USA), Berlin (Germany), Johannesburg (South Africa), London (UK), Madrid (Spain) and Melbourne (Australia); from Brazil, Rio de Janeiro (RJ) and Salvador (BA) are also part of the group.
