With projections in buildings, São Paulo launches campaign on women’s rights to information access

Global initiative foments female citizen participation in their municipalities

To mark the launch of the campaign “Inform Women, Transform Lives”, the city of São Paulo assembled projections in two buildings on the periphery of the capital of São Paulo, next Monday night, September 20th. The projections will be held in Parelheiros (South Zone) and in Itaquera (East Zone), from 6 to 7 P.M., with a message on the importance of knowing how to report cases of violence against women. The projections will also be transmitted by the Municipal Department of International Affairs (SMRI) on social media.

The campaign “Inform Women, Transform Lives'' is a Carter Center unedited initiative, that seeks to promote women’s rights to information access.

In the capital of São Paulo, the campaign’s focus is combating gender violence, mobilising the five Woman Citizenship Centers (CCM), equipment qualified for attending women in situations of violence.

The CCMs, as the Woman Reference Centers (CRM) and the House of the Brazilian Woman (CMB), form the frontline of the women’s protection network under the management of the Municipal Department of Human Rights and Citizenship (SMDHC).

The campaign’s goal is to make the population aware of women's rights to information, comprehended as a tool to combat the violence against women.

“It is fundamental to create alternatives to make women able to, more and more, inform themselves on their rights and access the municipal services in a simple and uncomplicated way. This campaign, in partnership with The Carter Center, brings to São Paulo the opportunity to speak to all women of the municipality to build a gender equality and women emancipation”, pointed out the municipal secretary of International Affairs, Marta Suplicy.

The local campaign is developed by the teams of the municipal departments of International Affairs, of Human Rights and Citizenship, of Open Government of São Paulo and the General Comptroller of the Municipality, along with The Carter Center.

Among the actions planned are the creation of graffiti by women artists in the five CCMs of the capital, creative workshops of zines and signs, an entrepreneurship event, in addition to the actions on social media and the divulgation of a testimonial video on the importance of knowing how to recognize and how to combat gender violence.

In addition to São Paulo, the cities of Atlanta (USA), Chicago (USA), Amman (Jordan), Buenos Aires (Argentina), Cape Town (South Africa), Colombo (Sri Lanka), Dhaka (Bangladesh), Guatemala City (Guatemala), Kampala (Uganda), Lima (Peru) and Monrovia (Liberia) were also chosen to develop media actions on information access and women citizen participation in their municipalities.

Female empowering and violence combat

The Woman Citizen Center (CCM) are spaces of qualification and graduation in citizenship, in which women of different ages, races and beliefs can organize and defend their social, economical and cultural rights. The units are localized in five regions of São Paulo that offer women the opportunity to offer and participate in actions and projects that stimulate the implementation of policies that attend to their necessities and their community.

For being spaces of listening and welcoming, the campaign of the city of São Paulo uses the concept “A place for all women”. The idea highlights the acting of the CCMs and CRMs to promote citizenship and also guide women in violence situations on their rights and support offered by the municipal administration.
