São Paulo adheres to Glasgow Declaration on Food and Climate

This agreement aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in regional and urban food systems

The city of São Paulo adhered to the Glasgow Declaration on Food and Climate on May 3rd. The initiative was coordinated by the Municipal Secretariat of International Affairs and reinforces the municipality's commitment to combating climate and environmental emergencies.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), global food systems measure up to a third of polluting gases' emissions, responsible for the greenhouse effect. The Glasgow Declaration on Food and Climate suggests that local and regional governments come together to develop policies that guarantee the planning of integrated food systems and tackle climate and environmental emergencies. Between the participants' cities are Barcelona (Spain), Istanbul (Turkey), and Paris (France) - you can check all signatory governments here.

By signing the document, the city of São Paulo unites with other subnational governments in an initiative that strives to change the environmental scenario. The main commitments of the Glasgow Declaration are the development and implementation of food strategies and policies and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in regional and urban food systems.

The initiative of this agreement is led by Nourish Scotland and by the International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems (IPES-Food). The declaration was elaborated in a partnership between city networks, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and non-governmental organizations associated with food systems and climate changes.
