São Paulo City Hall receives former chess champion

 September 2, 2011: the São Paulo City Hall and the Secretariat for International Relations, have received Garry Kasparov, one of the most important names in chess history. Mr. Kasparov came to São Paulo with the goal of spreading and developing the concept of the chess as a sport.


The player has also participated in the I Seminar of Chess dedicated to municipal´s schools in the city. The unprecedented event in São Paulo, aims at the discussing of recreational, educational and scientific aspects of chess, as well as its incorporation into educational systems.


"I am impressed to see such a great amount of people involved with or teaching chess assisting this event today. I am very happy and convinced of the potential of growth of chess in Sao Paulo and Brazil. Together we can achieve better results. I have never seen so many people dedicated to the game and helping children improving their skills, "said Garry Gasparov.


São Paulo, in cooperation with the city of Bilbao in Spain, will host the final phase of the Chess Gran Slam 2011 which confirms the increasing potential of the sport development in the city, besides reinforcing São Paulo´s ability in hosting major international events.


In Sao Paulo, the finals will be held between September 25th and October 1st at the Ibirapuera Park, as for the phase in Bilbao, it will take place between October 1st and 11th.
