São Paulo City Hall signs Declaration Against Structural Racism

The city commits itself to summon other local governments, networks and international organizations to implement combating policies against racial descrimination

Last Friday (19), at the opening of the 1st Black Consciousness International Expo, Mayor Ricardo Nunes and the Vice-Governor Rodrigo Garcia signed the Declaration of São Paulo Against Structural Racism. The document is a commitment which ensures that City Hall continues to formulate public policies for combating structural racism, foment the dialogue among governments and international organisations on the subject and work for the diffusion of affirmative actions to overcome historical inequities.

São Paulo is one of the biggest cities of Latin America and the Brazilian city with the highest absolute number of black population in Brazil. Facing the persistent racial inequities, City Hall, lead by the Municipal Department of International Affairs, created the project São Paulo, Farol de Combate ao Racismo Estrutural, that has as its objective promoting the racial equality thought pioneer public policies and foment the sharing of experiences and good practices, throughout the strategic dialogue with activists, academy and authorities at national, regional and international level.

“We understand that the propagation of the public policy, especially among international cities networks, is of great importance because, throughout the exchange of experiences and good practices, is possible to face global challenges, like combating racism and promoting racial equality, in a local way”, explains the Municipal Secretary of International Affairs, Marta Suplicy.

To help spread a historical narrative in which the black population is protagonist and has as its focus its strategies and fights for emancipation and equality, to foment the knowledge and debate, was implemented, between November 20th to 22nd, the 1st Black Consciousness International Expo.
