The City of São Paulo adheres to COP 26 Transport Day Declaration on the acceleration of transition of cars and vans with emission zero

Secretary Marta Suplicy highlighted the Municipal Government's commitment to decarbonisation

On Wednesday morning (26), in Glasgow, São Paulo formally adhered to the COP 26 Transport Day Declaration on the acceleration of transition to zero-emission cars and vans. During the launch event, those in the plenary session were able to watch a video with many interventions by many signatories, among which among was the Municipal Secretary of International Affairs of São Paulo, Marta Suplicy, who highlighted that the Municipal Administration works aligned to the goals of decarbonisation as stated in the declaration.

“As cities, states, and regional governments, we will work towards converting our owned or leased car and van fleets to zero emission vehicles by 2035 at the latest, as well as putting in place policies that will enable, accelerate, or otherwise incentivise the transition to zero emission vehicles as soon as possible, to the extent possible given our jurisdictional powers.”, highlights the document.

The City of São Paulo has a policy of climate change instituted by the Municipal Law 14.933/09, with the following goal, highlighted in Art. 4: “The Municipal Policy of Climate has the goal to assure the contribution of the Municipality of São Paulo in the fulfillment of purposes of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, of achieving the stabilisation of greenhouse gas concentration in the atmosphere in a level that prevents further dangerous antropic intervention in the climate system, in sufficient time to allow ecosystems to adapt naturally to climate change and to ensure that food production is not threatened and to allow economic development to proceed in a sustainable manner.”

On that score, the commitment assumed this morning is convergent to the municipality’s public policy.
