Beco do Pinto

‘Beco do Pinto’

Also known as the ‘Beco do Colégio’ (‘College Alley’), this was a passageway used in colonial São Paulo for the movement of people and animals, connecting the 'Largo da Sé’ (‘Cathedral Square’) to the meadows of the River Tamanduateí. Currently, together with the ‘Casa da Imagem’ and the ‘Solar da Marquesa de Santos’, it forms an important architectonic, historical and cultural grouping.

The space’s name is related to the surname of the owner of the house next door, Brigadier José Joaquim Pinto de Moraes Leme, and to the quarrels he had, not just with his neighbors but also the city, for having closed off access to the alley in 1821. The throughway was reopened in 1826, receiving the official name of ‘Beco do Colégio’ from the Chamber. In 1834, upon buying this building from one of Brigadier Pinto’s heirs, the Marchioness de Santos managed to get the Chamber to officially close the thoroughfare. After the opening of Avenue Rangel Pestana in 1912, the old ‘Ladeira do Carmo’, the ‘Beco’ was no longer used and was definitively taken out of service.

Traces of paving from the 18th century in dolomite, brick and cobble, and also fragments of crockery, glass, bones and graphite, as well as material used for autopsies, such as scalpels and knives belonging to the police station which operated at “House # 1” at the start of the 20th century, were collected during archeological digs conducted by the convention which met in 1979 and which involved the Historical Heritage Department and the ‘Museu Paulista’.

The stairs, bars and gates which exist today were installed during the restoration carried out in 1992, as a way of implementing a modern version, without losing the previous characteristics. The archeological windows showing traces of the old paving were also maintained.

The old passage between the ‘Solar da Marquesa de Santos’ and the ‘Casa da Imagem’, following the restoration which finished in 2011, has been converted into a space for visual poetry and creation, housing artistic installations that establish a dialogue between today and the history that the two institutions and the architectonic grouping on Rua Roberto Simonsen represent.
